Each year, North Carolina loses more than 100,000 acres of forests, farmland, and other natural areas -
an average of 277 acres per day to development.  At this rate, we are quickly losing our enviable quality of
life and the character of our communities. In the Blue Ridge Foothills alone some 60,000 acres of corporate
lands will be up for grabs in the next 5-10 years. Progress and development are inevitable: thoughtless progress
and development are not.

Our region's economy is depressed. The robustness that we once experienced seems noticeably absent.
Attracting new businesses and entrepreneurs to our area depends in large measure on our natural resources
and the beauty of our region.

Foothills Conservancy, a regional eight-county land trust, works in partnership with landowners, conservation
developers, and public agencies to preserve scenic vistas, rivers, and other naturally significant and diverse
tracts of land. Our land trust protects lands that are important to our spiritual well being, economic vitality and
quality of life. Since 1995 we have protected well over 27,000 acres.

Land trusts are the fastest growing conservation movement in the country and have a proven record of success.
One simple reason is that their mission is consistent with the dual values of those who believe that owning property
and conserving land are complimentary goals, and that economic progress does not have to be sacrificed for
environmental protection. Indeed land trusts have proven to be agile, innovative, and entrepreneurial.

Foothills Conservancy seeks your help in crafting a bold vision for our region's future. We invite you to join our new
Horizon Society.

The Horizon Society is intended to encourage annual giving at the $1,000 or above level and to showcase those who
by their leadership and example influence others to protect the unique character of our region. Members will be
recognized at a special annual event and featured in our publications.

As a Horizon Society member your financial support will assist us in invaluable ways as we go forward and proactively
plan for tomorrow.Your funding will enable us to look with unclouded eye toward the future and the beckoning horizon.

We confront daunting land-use and economic issues in our region in the next decade. Yet we are a daring and innovative
people. What happens in the Blue Ridge Foothills need not happen by chance but by plan.

Help us to save the places that you love…won't you join us in the Horizon Society today?
